    Description

A fine and very collectable German saltglazed stoneware Bellarmine jug with a compressed, bulbous body and nice looping handle; the neck with an applied 'scary' mask; glazed all over with a fine, rich, reddish-brown 'Tiger' glaze; Cologne or Siegburg, circa 1600.
    This
    superb
Bellarmine is a lot smaller than average at just 5 5/8 inches tall. The base diameter is 2 1/2 inches. It has a lovely compact, tactile form. There is a fine cordon around the rim for tying a leather tie to keep a cork or leather bung in place. It has a detailed mask of 'scary' type with a short, clipped beard. Such masks may have been intended to ward off evil spirits in a time when people were very superstitious and often exposed to danger in the course of their daily lives.
This Bellarmine has had some restoration - this was done before we bought it so we can't be precise about the extent except to say it has been superbly done and the appearance is now excellent. Work seems to have been confined to the the handle and the shoulders just below the beard. The restoration is really superbly done and the appearance is now perfect (see the accompanying 12 photos).
    This is a very
    rare
early bellarmine of small size to add to your collection or to your dealer inventory. It is also a
    wonderful
display item. Thanks for bidding and we wish you the best of luck!
